Paris was much cleaner than I foredeemed, both on the week before the Olympics in July, and in early September as well.

This train is goïng to Pont de Sèvres. But instead of lighting up previous stations, the linear metro map lights up those the train is yet to stop at. The opposite of a progress bar!

For residents’ tranquility, please do not throw away glass bottles between 22⁰⁰ and 7⁰⁰. Very thoughtful!

First of all, the euphoric smell is still there. I didn’t find it as common as in 2020 and before, but it does come from the Tube and it also came from a bus. May it stay.

Wi-Fi signs in trains

Wi-Fi signs on train doors will be noticed by passengers only when they’re about to get off:

Bus doors should always open outwards. It’s just logic: inwards-opening doors take up space that could otherwise be filled by passengers.

“Do not disturb” in hotels

Most hotels give customers door tags with “Do not disturb” written on them. I don’t understand why. It’s obvious that no person ever wants to be ever disturbed. If you think that it’s something about cleaning the room, it isn’t: hotels give out these tags even when you’re staying for one night.

Plus, in hotels with actual keys, you give them to the reception when leaving. Therefore the hotel knows when you’re gone. In those with plastic cards, the hotel knows I’m in my room as soon I as open the door.

I am in one of these today, and there’s a button instead of a tag. The button works only when I have my card inside the slot (I tried the business card approach; everything works only when the card is in there), so I took a second card. And as soon as I come back from outside DND is deactivated so I have to press the button once more. This button would be super useful if it would physically block the door from being opened by hotel staff or anybody else with the key, but it just shines a barely noticeable LED.

Train door buttons

Obviously, all buttons should be responsive to touches in gloves. There should be no buttons on trains that go only through a closed space.

Redesigning an elevator control panel

There’s this two-floor building which I often visit with an elevator interface that is way too complex:

Seriously, why does it need five buttons?

First of all, the “Close doors” button is a lie. It is also unnecessary to have two buttons to choose from when there’s only one way to go.

The useful action must take up more area than the extras:

But that’s still not enough. The elevator has a scale built in, so it won’t go when too crowded. This scale can be used for another feature, human presence detection. As soon as the elevator detects that weight isn’t changing, it shuts the doors and goes. A screen can be used to make the elevator more informative.

Therefore, the only buttons needed in an elevator are those for emergencies like getting stuck inside or in-between the doors.

The only problem that remains is the waste of time that the elevator is. Sure, you save time and energy by using it instead of a staircase, but the ride could be much more pleasant. A 10-second cat video will solve everything.

A game show would be even better, but the journey here is way too short for that.
