The industrial smell of London brings me a kind of euphoria that I don’t feel in any other circumstance.

Outside of London, I sense this smell only a couple of times per year for no more than a minute.

Good vibrations in unlikely circumstances

I fondly remember having uniquely good vibrations in two unlikely circumstances of the recent past:

living in an Italian-language field school just before the first lockdown, with air filled by the smell of a certain soap;
feeling that January 6th and the crypto bull-run were about to upgrade the world, with ears tuned to eighties’ disco.

Thankful to wake up each day

Ever since the 2022 Ukrainian escalation, the first thing that I feel every morning is gratitude for being alive and not having been wiped out by a nuke.

Being half-asleep is the greatest feeling in the world. One feels awake, but it takes an alarm clock to actually wake up and understand what was going on.

Bugs in own programs

I feel great joy when finding and squashing bugs in my own programs.

Discounts are not gifts

Every birthday I get reminded about how many companies have collected my information.

Besides sending me distracting and soulless messages, they give discounts for their products. Some happen to call them gifts. Discounts are not gifts!

A gift is actually something, physical or not. A discount is a possibility to get that something easier.

Imagine if a friend gave you a coupon as a present. Not a gift card, but a coupon. How would you feel?

Seriously, a conditionless free cup of tea is better than a discount “as a gift”, especially knowing that most customers aren’t abusers and will probably buy something else.

People often make incorrect choices when there are more than four variables.

Simple problems require reason, while the complex not so much. When there’s a large variety of items to choose from, get the one that maximises enjoyment.

People memorise patterns without even knowing.

The emotional brain, powered by dopamine, is paramount for making good decisions.

People get addicted out of excitement, not necessity.

People get upset if what we expected didn’t come to fruition.

Being certain about something is a deceptive feeling.

Prize-linked savings accounts work because we like uncertainty.

Psychopaths don’t feel morality, and therefore, their wrongdoing.

People have a larger sense of loss than for win, even when dealing with the same value.

Never say that you wouldn’t do something in the way that that person handles it, because that person is who you would be at that moment in that situation.

When there’s an abundance of information, we may infer the irrelevant. Cut down on the noise, focus on what’s important.
