The Journey into Color

Robert:

The Giracolore is a spin-art machine pertaining to the new popular tradition of Italian toys:

Raffaele Cesano, the Giracolore’s creator, asked me to make a book with its history and practical uses.

“The Journey into Color” (Il viaggio nel colore) is now the first book I have fully designed, and perhaps even my biggest design work yet. Its copies now come with every device put on sale.

The client

Raffaele is a schoolteacher-turned-toymaker. He’s especially good at crafting traditional toys and games, like spinning tops, smol carousels, and wooden acrobats. He is fascinated with color in motion.

Process

Raffaele first gave me a bunch of material: pictures, informational texts, and stories. Some things would be repeated across four different texts, but each one would have something useful of its own. I read them all and then wove them into a fluent narrative. Every now and then, I would meet Raffaele to refine the text together. I also took some disc pics myself.

I learned a lot about book design while working on this. For example:

The placement of punctuation and line breaks affects legibility. A line break at the wrong syllable can make a word appear to be a different one.

Consistency in punctuation colors and weights is a science of its own!

Outcome

I chose a 13×18 cm format for the book so it would fit perfectly into the Giracolore’s 13.5×19 cm box. Nothing is arbitrary here: the disc on the cover is the size of a real one. I made sure each spread had at least some color.

The imprint page and its adjacent table of contents are stunning: the gradient title, the rare NB ligature, the Italian cockade (which looks like a Giracolore disc!), the frame…

The book begins with a short introduction to the Giracolore and proceeds with spin-art’s history. Notice the alignment of the words “bellezza” on the left page:

The book then delves into color psychology:

And culminates with stories metaphorically illustrated with the Giracolore. Here’s one of them, The Little Blonde Girl, with the parallelism principle at work:

Some pages encourage to make one’s own disc and glue it in:

The book ends with an invitation to take a look at Raffaele’s other projects and to contact him:

The book is set in three styles of Apfel Grotesk: Regular, Fett, and Brukt (for the “stick your disc here” label).

Conclusion

The book is the best introduction to the Giracolore, vividly showing the device’s value for children, teachers, artists, storytellers, and therapists.

Good design is never boring.

The client’s review

Robert has visually arranged The Journey into Color with great success and has helped me introduce it to the public.

Robert has various qualities: his youthful energy gave me confidence to express what I felt. I had fun letting him do his thing, letting him express and interpret my ideas. Everyone has the right to play the game they enjoy the most.

The result is what I wanted.

I initially hesitated to pay in advance, but during the course of the work, I saw Robert’s reliability firsthand.

Enjoy the colors!

Robert:

On October 26, 2024, I was in Naples to speak at Linux Day 2024. I also had a few hours to see the city.

It is a place unlike any other in Italy; it’s a semi-anarchic country of its own. “Math diplomas in 3 minutes, only in Naples” is an advert I saw there. Free entrepreneurship runs wild.

Folks don’t follow the rules of the road at all. Everyone must pay attention to not be hit by a car or motorbike.

Yet, thank god Italian legislation isn’t fully enforced there; Naples’ ways are the cultural heritage that gives the place its special vibes.

I visited a (legit) clothing store, which however didn’t have any price tags. I negotiated a discount on an “already discounted price” (yeah, right), only to have the clerk ask me to pay the original price at the checkout. I reminded him about the negotiated discount, to have him reply “just kidding”. I would have stormed out of the store if this was not Naples.

Neapolitans also really care about their soccer team. One could even say they are religiously devoted to it.

Oh, and they speak in their own tongue; not in Italian.

Naples is Italy’s meme city.

I love the country more than ever after having been to Naples.

Italy is so beautifully diverse: Genoa, Venice, Florence, and Naples are four key cities to see here.

Logo concept for MoneroDice

Robert:

As part of my work for MoneroDice, I was asked to make a logo for the site: “something very simple, based on the Monero logo”.

I started coming up with ideas:

And then designed this prototype:

It even has a little Easter egg: the Monero logo is put in place of the number 3. Three sounding just like free, which Monero helps us become.

But it did not scale down well as a favicon. So I simplified it:

But this version was kind of boring. It needed a special something.

So I turned it by 6 degrees, making the die land in a much more natural position:

This one worked great as a favicon:

However, the client felt that this logo did not have enough in common with the Monero logo, orange beïng their only shared trait.

The client then made their own, building upon the 6° angle and rounded corners from mine:

Improving MoneroDice

Robert:

MoneroDice is a dice and blackjack game site that accepts Monero. It’s simple and private; there are no accounts or KYC procedures.

Since May 2024, I’ve been helping improve the site’s player experience.

Bugs

I started by testing the site and looking for bugs. I did find a couple, but nothing critical or worth bringing up in this post.

Language

Much of my work centered around making the site’s wording as clear as mightly.

I transformed titles into sentence case and rewrote phrases to simplify punctuation. I removed phrases like PLAY NOW — previously used in page titles — since they gave off a cheap and scammy vibe. I made a range of corrections to the FAQ.

“Select your odds & win multiplier” became “Choose your win multiplier & odds”. The word chance was ubiquitously replaced with odds.

Verbs are the mightiest words. Thus the Feedback page’s full title “Feedback request” became “Leave feedback”.

Multiplier symbols * and x were all transformed into the traditional (and beautiful) ×.

I also helped write a promotional text for Cryptwerk, and made a banner for it:

Ease of use and player experience

But it’s not all about words. The user interface’s functionality matters too.

Since 🚀 and 🗽 emojis were used to show the game mode in the Recent games table, I added them to the mode selection itself:

I flipped the order of Feedback comments to show the latest ones up-top; feedback is not a blogpost discussion.

A good user interface forbids pointless actions. Thus, I froze a bunch of buttons in various circumstances:

the nav-menu button for the current page,

“Copy address” and “Open in wallet” buttons when a payback address is not provided,

Blackjack’s “Show related transactions” button when there are no transactions to show,

Blackjack’s + button when a player does not have enough bankroll to raise the bet,

the button for the current background.

I also made sure the email address in the footer became clickable.

The other smol (but helpful) improvements, both to interface and typography, are too many to list here.

Blackjack

To lessen cognitive burden, I stopped listing buttons’ functions on their hint pop-ups. In this case, the words “Double down” no longer appear:

When disabling the computer’s voice, it no longer reacts by saying “voice disabled”.

MCEP suggestion

I also suggested MoneroDice sign the Monero Circular Economy Pledge — it was already matching the criteria. MoneroDice is now one of the Pledge’s signatories.

Result

More people than ever are playing MoneroDice, and they are sharing their delight on Reddit, Cryptwerk, and on the site’s own Feedback page.

Here’s the client’s review:

I’m actually quite happy from the work you have done for MoneroDice so far. I’ve made many improvements with your suggestions and advice.

Communication is kept professional.

I like that you are proactive looking for things which could be improved.

Logo concept for the 50th anniversary of Sergio Ramelli’s death

Robert:

In July, I participated in a design competition for a logo commemorating the 50th anniversary of anti-communist student Sergio Ramelli’s death.

The requirements for the design were the following:

usable on letterhead, posters, billboards, panels, and other formats;

adaptable to social media profile pictures (FB, Insta, X, Telegram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn);

can be turned into a banner for social media (FB, YouTube, LinkedIn) and the home page of the official website sergioramelli.it

Process

I started with simple, text-based banners:

Then I experimented with the pictures provided by the competition’s organiser:

What if I combine the number 50 with his picture?

The number 50 looks like goggles when in black-and-white. I’ll try to change that.

Turned the thing into a banner:

Changed the typeface:

And once more. Nah, I can’t do much to stop the overlaid 50 from looking like goggles:

I’ll make it simpler:

The final result, including the various graphics in their natural surroundings:

Result

I did not win. Another good design did:

I will note that it has an issue which I was careful to avoid in mine: slapping “1975–2025” without context makes it seem like the guy was born in 1975 and is about to have a birthday anniversary.

Webstead for 5elements

Robert:

5elements is an Italian agricultural corps which grows plants and sells products made with them. Its olives are the tastiest I’ve ever eaten.

Maurizio Zerbini, the man in charge, asked me to relaunch its webstead. Done:

The client

Maurizio was born to a family of farmers, and believes it is his duty to grow healthy food for himself and others. 5elements’ agriculture is respectful of nature and is also biodynamic, but what really sets it apart is the widespread use of EM — Effective Microörganisms — as disinfectants and fertilisers.

Process

5elements has real people behind it; it’s not a soulless corporation. It’s always important to highlight this, so my photo of a smiling Maurizio is the first thing one sees when opening the site:

Also up-top are contact details and a certification notice.

This webstead is not an online store, just a catalog. But selling is of course essential, so the places to buy products are listed immediately below his picture. A click on “direct sales” teleports the site’s visitor to the contact details:

And since this is not an online store, it was easy to make the product images big:

Maurizio has given talks and interviews about effective microörganisms, so I made a page for them:

Foa, the locality where 5elements grows its plants, is rich, beautiful, and is an unofficial Dark Sky Sanctuary. Customers should be able to know where their food grows, so I took some pictures and gave them their own page:

Contact details are listed on the top and bottom of each page. Slightly asymmetrically, as a little nudge to contact the agricorps:

Result

5elements is now back online. Anyone interested in the company and its products can now learn about them without complicated message exchanges.

A word to Maurizio:

Excellent. I say you have done a good job.

5elements.it

Robert:

Atkinson Hyperlegible is my default typeface for Latin-alphabet undertakings, including the Nice tramway map and some client work as well.

It does have an issue thô: the slashed zero actually makes text less legible in some cases. So I got rid of it in my modification:

Nice tramway map, December 2023

Robert:

Today I’m releasing the biggest update yet to my Nice tramway map:

It now shows a railway line which was recently integrated into the urban fare zone. The line is thinner because of its longer intervals.

Line 2 no longer has a callout box! It has an extra indication in its middle. CADAM station is now in a geographically correct position.

Nearly all line 1 station names now face right, and are therefore easier to read. The map is now using my default typeface, Atkinson Hyperlegible.

Ground interchanges are now indicated more clearly.

I simplified the colors a bit, too. Line 2 and the sea’s name now use the coat of arms’ blue, while parks and gardens use line 3’s green.

The map is still the same size. High information density FTW!

Merceneros visual identity

Robert:

Merceneros is a coöperative offering technical services to the Monero economy.

I designed its visual identity based on the trope of programming, having the colors allude to Monero:

This design is super-universal — the list of values in brackets varies with context, and will expand with the group offering more services:

Also, this visual identity needs no special graphics for implementation — only the JetBrains Mono typeface.

There’s a compact version of the logo too:

Here it is in the chats. The second logo is an internal one, with a caret instead of a bracket:

I went from start to finish in less than a day.
